What employers look for

Your employer will provide training and support to turn you into a teacher, so they are not worried about your teaching ability at this stage. But they look for these attributes in you:

1. Your interest in teaching and education

For your employer, the one most important characteristic is your interest in teaching and education. If you are not interested in teaching and education, you will not last long as a teacher.

Show your interest in interviews. Prepare some mock lesson plans, think about what materials you will use, and do some research into the Japanese education system.

2. Your interest in teaching a young age group

You will be teaching students from age 6 to 18. Teaching these students is totally different experience from teaching adults.

If you like kids, and if you can show that you have some experience in interacting with kids, then that will definitely be a plus.

3. Your interest in teaching English to non-English speakers

This is your job description. If you not interested in teaching English to non-English speakers, you will not enjoy your life as an English teacher in Japan.

In order to make teaching English an exciting and rewarding experience, you must be interested in your job and committed to it.

4. Your attitude towards foreign culture & values

Living in Japan will be a new experience for you. You will see and experience many amazing things and will make many unforgettable memories. But what if you experience negative culture shock? How do you deal with social norms that contradict your values?

Your employer wants to find out if you will be able to settle down in a country far away from home.

5. Business manners

In Japan, business manners such as punctuality and smart appearance are treated very seriously, and you will be expected to do the same.

Do your own research into the well-known Japanese business manners and be prepared.

For example in the Skype interview, be ready at least 15 minutes before the appointment time. Men should wear a suit with tie. Women should wear a smart dress/blouse that does not reveal shoulders. Wear little or no accessories. Hide your tattoos.

6. Your interest in Japan

Why Japan? You will be asked this question so prepare a good answer.
